What Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill really says | The Week

Here in Florida especially…Our children and schools are definitely under attack…All these concerns are manufactured by divisive politics….

In my many years as a teacher of young children…we never discussed their sexual identity…They were learning how to socialize with others…And to become who they were …And accept our differences…

Why Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill has caused a nationwide uproar

A controversial piece of legislation commonly known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill passed the Florida Senate on Tuesday after being approved by the House last month. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has signaled that he plans to sign the bill. Why is the bill getting so much national attention?

What’s in the bill?

The legislation, more officially titled the “Parental Rights in Education” bill, seeks to restrict the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity with public school children, especially from kindergarten to the third grade.

The text of the bill, which was filed on Jan. 11 by state Rep. Joe Harding (R), stipulates that “[c]lassroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate.”

“If that language seems vague, it is,” writes CNN. “But vague legislation can have massive consequences.”

The bill also empowers parents to sue schools and teachers that violate this ban, enhancing the ability of Florida’s parents to object to their children’s curricula.

Notably, the “Don’t Say Gay” nickname was created and spread by activist opponents to the bill. The bill does not seek to prohibit the use of the word “gay” in schools, supporters note.

LGBT advocacy group Equality Florida threatened to “lead legal action against the State of Florida” if “the vague language of this bill” is “interpreted in a way that causes harm to a single child, teacher, or family.” Kara Gross of the ACLU’s Florida branch told Time the bill could infringe on teachers’ First Amendment rights.

In his State of the Union speech, President Biden told “younger transgender Americans” he would “always have your back … so you can be yourself and reach your God-given potential.”

DeSantis is expected to sign the bill into law. He has repeatedly expressed support for the legislation, though he hasn’t explicitly said he will sign it if it reaches his desk, ABC News reports. If he does, however, the law would go into effect July 1.

To New Beginnings…The Need for Change Must Come Now…

Pandemic… Divisive Politics…and Now War!!! Issues impacting the lives of our children…everyday…

And because of this, right here in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis, along with many of his republican followers…

Do all they can do to restrict what are children learn in history… a school’s freedom the choice to wear masks; and prohibiting the rights of children who may be gay, to talk with their teacher about their concerns; In addition, now promoting cameras in classrooms to watch what is happening!!!

Here in my former school district, We were so fortunate to have a strong advocate for our children… Our school superintendent, recently got fired because of her outspokenness for advocating for our children’s freedom…She stood up to our governor…

I pray for the children and people of Ukraine… And the other countries of the World who struggle with their freedoms through war… How will this “time in our history” affect our children

We must vote for our children…💕🌈🙏🏼🇺🇸

Now is the time!!! We must give our children better opportunities…Yet, because of all the divisiveness these circumstances make it extremely challenging…

We must vote, and speak out… And give support to those who Advocate for our Children.. Our President can not do it alone…

Help from U.S. Dept of Education…Our Schools are Standing Strong for our Children…

The political divide affecting our school’s health and safety during these most challenging of times is requiring the U.S. Dept of Education get more involved…

Our local school district here in Alachua County, Florida has always put the safety needs of our children first and continues to stand firm…

U.S. Dept of Education threatens state education leaders over school masking
By Jake Stofan
Published: Oct. 26…

The U.S. Department of Education is warning the Florida’s Department of Education it could face sanctions if it continues to penalize school districts that implement mask mandates…

The letter is the latest escalation in a continued back and fourth between local governments, the state and feds over masking in schools.

The letter from the U.S. Department of Education comes in response to the state vowing to withhold additional money from school boards if they backfill their salaries with federal dollars...

Alachua Superintendent Dr. Carlee Simon told us her district never took the federal aid.

But we are watching, and in the event that we need to draw down funding from the federal government, when we do, we will let the commissioner know,” said Simon.

The letter threatens enforcement action, but the state isn’t backing down.

In a statement, the Florida Department of Education called the letter ‘legally hollow’ and said it would continue forward, ‘lawfully, as we have this entire time’.

“Governor DeSantis is in the catbird seat,” said State Representative Randy Fine.

Fine, who chairs the House PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee, said while it’s not clear exactly what the feds are threatening, he sees no reason for the state to worry…

“It ends when California and New York taxpayers pay for education in Florida, which I think would be an outstanding outcome and I hope President Biden does it,” said Fine.

The school masking debate is expected to enter the halls of the Capitol in an upcoming special session, and it’s a Republican State Senator from Alachua County who is leading the charge.

Senator Keith Perry’s bill would make any school mask mandate null and void…

Dr. Simon called the proposal shortsighted.Right now we’re talking about COVID… What about other future viruses that might come about?” said Simon.

And Rep. Fine told us beyond the legislation, school districts that fought the state over masking should expect additional punishment saying he doesn’t think they will have a good budget year…

Rep Fine also said he believes local officials that implement mask mandates should face criminal charges, but the legislation currently on the table does not include any specific penalties…

We must be vigilant and strong for our children’s health and safety… Especially when there is such divisiveness between local and state governmental controls… Speak out!!!

Florida’s Schools Need Help… Critical for our Children….

Our Governor, Ron DeSantis characterizes Florida as the “Education State”…

This is so far from reality…

Children are affected by the new variant and he refuses mask and vaccine mandates…

Our FEA Safe Schools Report: 2021-22 school year | Florida Education Association

FEA’s Safe Schools Report: 2021-22

Covid cases are rising daily. Years of neglect have left schools with crumbling infrastructure and without working air conditioning. Our schools’ teacher and staff shortage was already far too high. Now rising illnesses and quarantines are pushing some districts to a breaking point. Bus driver shortages are creating havoc statewide.

How has Gov. DeSantis responded to these crises? He has already withheld billions of dollars intended to help schools and communities recover from the ongoing public health emergency. On top of that he is now threatening to take away funding from school districts who follow the medical advice given to them by doctors in their communities.

As educators, we know a bully when we see one and we know the only way to end bullying is to join together to call out the bad behavior…

Take a stand today by emailing Gov. DeSantis to tell him to stop threatening locally elected school board members for following their duty to keep students safe…

Tell Gov. DeSantis to support school boards’ authority to keep students safe Gov. Ron DeSantis is threatening to withhold funds from school districts that follow the advice of health professionals in their communities. We must tell him to stop.

TAKE ACTION NOW!

Gov. DeSantis, respect locally elected school boards

Florida… The Education State…

Amen…💕🌈🙏🏼🍎

Through all the challenges facing our children…I keep holding onto hope, and pray for that better day… Opportunities come and go… We have a president that cares…and is providing opportunities…funding and resources…And trying to keep children safe during this pandemic…

Then, we here in Florida are dealing with a governor that does not care…And then he does something quite unexpectedly and why…

@GovRonDeSantis…
How I have held onto hope.. For some reason you will be eliminating our rigid testing system, and developmentally inappropriate curriculum…Is this true???

So many questions…

What will this mean for the success of our children?
You describe Florida, “The Education State…”

However….Putting children first in safe schools will be Florida’s direction…

Means…Provided them with the 7 billion dollars you are withholding…from the Biden administration…And allowing vaccination and mask mandates in our schools…

If your real intent to give our children opportunities…We definitely would be…
