Opinion | DeSantis bans math textbooks to save Florida kids from being indoctrinated – The Washington Post

When Florida released the names Monday of the 54 math textbooks it had rejected, most for allegedly including โ€œcritical race theoryโ€ or other โ€œprohibited topics,โ€ I was struck by how the publishers had adjusted their titles to reflect the stateโ€™s singular interpretation of the subject matter…

The books had names such as โ€œFlorida Reveal Math,โ€ or โ€œFloridaโ€™s B.E.S.T. Math,โ€ or simply โ€œFlorida Math.โ€ The titles essentially codified what Republican Gov. Ron DeSantisโ€™s censorship program has accomplished: There is math โ€” and then there is Florida math.

On one level, we already understood that โ€œFlorida mathโ€ is not the same thing as โ€œmathโ€:

Problem 1: In an election, the Republican candidate gets 232 electoral votes and the Democratic candidate gets 306. Who won?

Answer: It was rigged.

Problem 2: Florida had 153 coronavirus deaths per 100,000 people over the past year while California had only 58 per 100,000. How much higher is Floridaโ€™s death rate?

Answer: Iโ€™m going to do my own research.

Itโ€™s easy to laugh at Floridaโ€™s claim that it rejected 28 math textbooks over โ€œpublishersโ€™ attempts to indoctrinate studentsโ€ with such โ€œspecial topicsโ€ as CRT, โ€œculturally responsive teaching,โ€ โ€œsocial justiceโ€ and โ€œsocial emotional learning.โ€

But then I opened the 2020 edition of one of the banned textbooks, Cengageโ€™s โ€œPrecalculus With Limitsโ€ โ€” and was horrified by the โ€œindoctrinating conceptsโ€ I saw. If this is Precalculus With Limits, Iโ€™d hate to see the kind without limits.

https://wapo.st/3NyCcQX

At a time when Floridians by law โ€œdonโ€™t say gay,โ€ much less โ€œtrans,โ€ this banned book brazenly teaches about the โ€œTransitive Property of Equality.โ€ Not only are impressionable minds taught about the โ€œtransformation of functions,โ€ but also they are even indoctrinated in โ€œdescribing transformationsโ€ and โ€” appallingly โ€” โ€œsketching transformation”…

At a time when DeSantis is trying to restore the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman, โ€œPrecalculus With Limitsโ€ has endless references to โ€œsinโ€ and โ€œpolynomialsโ€ โ€” even โ€œmultiplying polynomials.โ€ On Page 318, for example, it tells children to believe that โ€œsin x takes on its full range of values.โ€ Valuing sin! On Page 734, incredibly, it orders children to โ€œsketch the graph of the degenerate conic.โ€ Disgusting.

At a time when Florida is banning the acknowledgment of gender fluidity or any identity outside male and female, this subversive textbook unabashedly tells suggestible children that such things exist as โ€œreciprocal identities,โ€ โ€œcofunction identities,โ€ โ€œadditive identity propertyโ€ and even โ€œmultiplicative identity property.โ€

Right now, all Floridians should be fighting the radical socialists, but โ€œPrecalculus With Limitsโ€ is inviting children to find the โ€œsimplest form of a radical equation,โ€ or even to take a perfectly normal equation and โ€œrewrite with a radical.โ€ Which radical? Saul Alinsky?

I am not being hyperbolic. Or even parabolic.

This terrible tone is packed with mentions of โ€œregressionโ€ and other forms of deviancy (โ€œdefine conics in terms of eccentricity,โ€ it commands); it tries to promote forbidden teachings about sexuality in requiring young people to identify โ€œthe product of conjugate pairs.โ€

Some of its indoctrinating concepts are merely gross (โ€œGaussian eliminationโ€), while others are downright disgusting. โ€œThe focal chord perpendicular to the axis of the parabola is called the latus rectum,โ€ it says on Page 702. It goes on to tell Floridaโ€™s children to โ€œfind the length of the latus rectum.โ€ I donโ€™t even want to know how that is done.

As radical as it is filthy, โ€œPrecalculus With Limitsโ€ tries to undermine parental authority. On Page 74, it teaches children how to โ€œwrite an equation for the transformation of the parent function,โ€ even providing โ€œplotting pointsโ€ for โ€œtranslating a parent function.โ€ Had this book hit the classrooms, kids would have been graphing parents out of existence with a โ€œdouble stem-and-leaf plot.โ€

The textbook sneaks critical race theory into the curriculum in insidious ways. It teaches children about โ€œclassifying by discriminant,โ€ and its author appears to be obsessed with the far-left concept of addressing inequality: โ€œsolving linear inequalitiesโ€ (p. 40), โ€œhow to solve a polynomial inequalityโ€ (p. 184), โ€œsolving a system of inequalitiesโ€ (p. 512). The book blatantly and repeatedly commands students to โ€œsolve the inequalityโ€ even though they did not cause it and are not responsible for it.

Donโ€™t think this is about color? Well explain this, on Page 512: โ€œUsing a different colored pencil to shade the solution of each inequality in a system will make identifying the solution of the system of inequalities easier.โ€

Thanks to DeSantis, Floridaโ€™s children will never have to learn about such โ€œindoctrinating concepts.โ€ In fact, they wonโ€™t have to learn much of anything at all…

Florida, our time is now…Our children’s future is at stake!!!…

Our democracy here in Florida is truly in jeopardy…

Our precious children show their love…for Miss Lana….

COVINGTON, Ga. โ€” Students and staff at a Newton County elementary school are coming together to make sure one of their own feels supported.

Lana Gazhenko has been working at Oak Hill Elementary School in Covington for 21 years.

She is an American citizen but from Ukraine and still has a lot of family over there. She has been going through a lot of heartache with the Russian invasion.

The school staff and students wanted Ms. Lana to know she isnโ€™t alone. They surprised her by covering the school with sunflowers.

โ€œI cannot talk. Just speechless and I start crying,โ€ Lana told
